It’s a powerful thing.  Something that can bring both joy and tears- kinda like a puppy that has just eaten your favorite pair of 300 dollar shoes.

Damn that dog.

Anyway, like many of you I work in an office all day. Like many more of you I work in front of a computer monitor all day- which means sometimes your mind wanders. When the mind is left to drift you’d be surprised about the stupid fuckin’ tunes that pop into your head.

Here’s ten songs that get stuck on and off in my head on a weekly basis.

Carmel Dansen:

If you’ve ever been to an anime con- guaranteed you’ve seen someone doing this extra bouncey dance. Hell, it was seen on Jimmy Kimmel a few years ago- I’ve even seen a Severus Snape gif dancing to this damn things. As infectious as it is obnoxious- you’ll wish that more real well-endowed women knew the dance instead of the cartoon ones.

Nyan Cat:

I resisted the urge to watch this thing hundreds of times- that is until two friends of mine from the Morbid Anatomy library were singing it enough times to pique my interest.

Duran Duran Tie- “Is There Something I Should Know” and “Rio”:

My brother was obsessed with a capital ‘O” about these guys when I was younger so it’s no surprise why this invades my vacant thoughts. He’s been to many of their concerts, but I’m still convinced that he is one of very few straight men in the audience not being dragged by their girlfriend or wife.

Tank!!- The Cowboy Bebop Theme Song:

By far the best anime theme I have ever heard- from one of the best shows I’ve ever seen- and it has a Corgi

That Blasted Song from the Tainted Donuts AMV:

I hadn’t thought of this song in ages but a few weeks ago in an effort to distract myself from being super pissed at “ Alice: Madness Returns” I put the game on mute and played this song repeatedly until I beat the level. Thanks to this I didn’t throw the controller into the TV..Whoever made this originally I salute you! And the AMV is pretty damn well edited too.

“Legend of Zelda” Theme Music:

If you were an 80’s kid like I was, needless to say you spent many hours playing this game- stuck in the desert looking for fairies and trying to remember which gosh darn rock you needed to move to find that one castle.

“Look At My Horse” stupid damn internet video:

I still think that one part ( you know which one) is kind of disgusting. However, this song gets constantly stuck in my head-sometimes for days. The fact that it pretty much is an endless loop does not help what’s left of my sanity after grad school.

“Me vs. The Angry Mob” The World/ Inferno Friendship Society:

I am a huge fan of this band. I cannot hear this song without thinking of me bouncing around in over sized combat boots every Hallowmas for the last three years If the idea of punk/cabaret and bitching lyrics appeal to you see them live- it’s well worth it

“Castlevania” Theme Music:

Check out the Minibosses awesome cover of this one. Once again, hours of game play translated to me being cursed to hear this until the end of my days. And what a horrible night to have a curse

 Extra Bonus: Super-Annoying- Song- That NoLessThanAGod Uses Against Me

If you were a kid in New York, and your parents left you to watch  daytime TV- guaranteed you ran into this one incessantly. It must have been played five times a day when my grandmother used to sit around watching “ Days of Our Lives”.

That way is the right way. When someone who already admires the franchise and understands how much it means to people and takes the helm and gives you something awesome worth adding to the continuity.

Then there is the wrong way, the “Wolverine: Origins” way. Where Hollywood takes a really good cake that tastes right and looks awesome and puts it in the blender to see how the colors look all mixed up.

It feels familiar but is far from the same thing.

I adamantly refused to go see ” Xmen: First Class” on the ground that it could have sucked hardcore like “Origins” did. I was expecting Professor X to basically be hanging out with Don Draper and all my favorite mutants to be spun about simply because the producers thought ‘ hey this would look awesome! Let’s give that new kid in the CGI department a real test!”

Sure, it has it stupid moments, I still didn’t like the fact that Azazel was in it, or  Havok years before Scott and January Jones’ performance reminded me more of Mokujin from Tekken than Emma Frost- but admittedly- it was pretty damn good.

What I liked about it was the way it was melded in. Sure, it had the typical ‘ let’s try our powers’ montage- but it was done in such a way that didn’t feel schlocky. They clearly blended the surrounding atmosphere of the Cuban missile crisis to a story that convincingly uses its surreal cast of characters. It sounds like a really good fan-fiction. I also enjoyed the fact that they acknowledged what happened in the first two films, but largely ignored “Origins” and “  X3.

It does have a few odd moments, like why the hell is Mystique hiding in Charles’ kitchen like some magical gnome in the first place? Not to mention, it’s pretty weird watching her interact with Azazel considering- well umm Nightcrawler?

I totally dug the whole sixties thing, but then again I’m addicted to ” Mad Men” in the first place and Betty Draper in lingerie and vinyl just felt like Betty decided it was time to let her inner dominatrix out

I am not thrilled by the fact that the original X-men were not included in the film. To me that just makes- no fuckin’ sense. But I do understand why. Jean, Cyclops, Angel, Beast, Iceman were all played to death in the three X-films. In an odd way, it really did work. I couldn’t really stand to deal with Cyclops again anyway.

The fact that Charles was such a charismatic bastard early in the film ( hell, I know people like that) and in the later films he becomes so paternal and humble- made sense. What good is all that power if he can’t even walk? It makes him to a person who is much more appreciative of his powers and understanding to those who don’t have any at all.

So, okay, all right. I admit it. The movie wasn’t half bad, at all. It was fun quirky, albeit different from the source material but Matthew Vaughn obviously really gave a shit about the characters he was using.

On January 8th I posted something on Facebook. “the internet says I should have been watching Doctor Who for the past 45 years, who am I to argue? I guess i’ll give it a shot.” The feedback mostly said that as long as I just watched the show from where it picked up in 2005 I should be ok.

Fuck feedback.

I set about finding every piece of Doctor Who footage I could. No easy task by the way, apparently the BBC decided to destroy a good chunk of the first seven seasons of the show. Never the less, in the end I found the remnants of every episode, even 2 versions of Shada, an episode that was never finished. It took 2 months in all to acquire these shows through fair means or foul.

I watched every second of it. This took me four months and three days. I watched an curmudgeonly old man who lived with his granddaughter in a garbage dump turn into a dottering fool who was too clever for his own good. I saw a suave military scientist sacrifice himself for his friends only to wake up as a spastic pile of curls and teeth. I saw a happy go lucky gentleman wind up as a manic depressive jack ass who would just as soon spit on you as shake your hand in friendship, and finally a man who hid behind his smile subtle motives shot down by street violence only to wake up half human with an actual desire to kiss a woman.

EVERY BLOODY SECOND OF IT!

Now you might be saying to yourself “Oh boy, now he’s gonna blog about all this stuff… great! I could read about this anywhere!” So no, I’m not going to blog about that. I’m gonna blog about the show that started in 2005!

Like I said. It took me until today to get through it all. However, I also re-watched the first episode of the current series, the first to feature the 9th Doctor, as well as the character the episode is named for… Rose…

Now let me clarify right here that I had watched the new series before I went into the old stuff, and when the current season started I was watching the old right along side the new, but Jesus, this woman, I’d forgotten why I hated her right off the bat.

Here’s the situation folk.

Your job is invaded by walking, killing, store mannequins. While trying to get out, some guy with big ears who kind of resembles Batboy from the Weekly World News shows up and saves you while berating you and your entire society. Then he tells you to scram because he’s got to blow up the building. You’ve just met the ninth doctor.

Also in this issue, Big Foot marries Hitler!

You get away, but have no job now. Oh and you’re dumb ass decided to take one of the arms from the killer mannequins home.

So now this guy follows winds up on your doorstep saves you again from your stupid, and again said “screw off kid, you’re dumb and so is everything you hold dear.” So of course you Google him.

Long story short, while talking to a guy who is obsessed with the Doctor your boyfriend gets kidnapped by a garbage can and replaced with a giant GI Joe figure. Being the loving woman you are you don’t notice he’s now made of plastic until he attacks you. The Doctor saves you again from your stupid.

So you follow him like a lost dog as he goes to shut off all the killer plastic (WHAT THE FUCK??!) because blowing up your livelihood didn’t do the trick. Finally he tracks it to the source… with some help from you, good job on not being a twit for a second… and Yay! your boyfriend whom you’re supposed to care for is there. You kill the plastic by accident, and the day is saved.

Here it comes… The Doctor who has spent most of the time talking about how much you suck offers you a choice, stay with your boyfriend who has just been through a horrific trauma, or go off and meander about the universe with him leaving everyone you know and love behind… what a douche, I mean seriously, you’re sitting there cradling the man you claim to love. You say no, because really, what kind of jerk does that, and he leaves. Then he immediately comes back saying he can travel through time and you’re all “Hey boyfriend who’s in shock, Thanks for nothing!”

WHAT THE FUCK?

Well I guess it could be worse, at least he didn’t traumatize anyone into needing years of therapy after he met them and just left.

Anyone else slipped geekery into casual work related conversation?

‘Yes,’ I got into it because I was into the show on HBO. I was amazed at the sheer volume of violence that rivaled even some of my hardest Japanese flicks. I also love the fact that every character is slightly- despicable- with a widely visible Achilles heel. Frankly, lil; Arya has more balls than Sansa and her father combined.

My first impression was ” I saw, sex, more sex, incest, boobies, blood, gore, zombies and attempted murder of a nine ( ten?) year old- now that’s some watchin’”

So ‘yes’ I’m the jerk with the copy of the books that advertises for the fuckin’ show- what of it?

Ahem.

So I’ve been reading these books pretty avidly and it’s pretty much became a running gag now.

My Mom: Who got killed today?

Me:Hmm?? Oh the Dragon gir’s abusive incestuous brother got a boiling cauldron of gold poured on his head after he threatened to kill the dragon girls unborn child.

My Mom: Well, that’s a helluva thing.

That’s not the conversation in question though. The Mister ( read: suitor) currently works in a cafe.bar-type thing. It has a huge mommy-and-me following during the day. They have frikkin’ sing-a-long parties- for fucks sake. The owners want to make the place a happenin’ bar with a cool vibe that people will want to booze it up when the moms and kids head home. Hence, the hired my Mister.

Neither he nor I really have a problem with kids. Moms need a place to chill with other moms just the same as drunks need a place to drink with other drunks. And that’s fine.

I used to teach Pre-K to sixth grade art, so I kinda get kids. I will openly admit not as well as some. Kids however are people, just smaller- and sometimes sticky. However, like people- some kids just act like assholes. But please understand, the below conversation is all in good fun and not malicious.

Mister: God, help me. I think these kids are driving me insane.

GirlDuality: Why? And why are you only finding this out now?

Mister: There is just a gaggle of them here today. Screaming and running around like ill-mannered snipes.

GirlDuality: Slay them all. They will serve as a warning for the others

Mister: God, I love you sometimes.

GirlDuality:  I really got to stop reading those books.

Which means those lil’ ankle biting babies will be creepier, and that Pyramid Head rape scene will be  in super hi def- because…

Come to think of it why WOULD you want to see that in hi def??

We need a bit of terror in our lives, eh?

Here’s to me dropping more money on the Silent Hill franchise.
